Carry on Wayward Song, released in 1976, was the first major hit for Kansas. The song was a last-minute addition to the album Leftoverture.

Kansas had a way of almost leaving out their biggest hits from their albums. The song Dust in the Wind, a huge hit for them and their second major hit after Carry on Wayward Song, was also added at the last minute to its album.

Kansas guitarist Kerry Livgren wrote the lyrics to Carry on Wayward Son in just 2 days before recording Leftoverture. At the time, the song was not written to express anything religious, although Livgren did become an evangelical Christian in 1980.

The song has appeared in several hit movies over several decades including Anchorman (2004), Happy Gilmore (1996) and Heroes (1977), and makes our own Decades Lyrics list of the most popular singalong songs.
