The Story of Hey Jude

Hey Jude is an unforgettable song, even on the first time you hear it. The song has been extremely popular since it was released in 1968, remains one of The Beatles’ biggest hits, and was inspired by the divorce of John Lennon and Cynthia Lennon. As everyone knows, he left her for Yoko Ono.

The song evolved from a song that Paul McCartney had written to comfort Julian Lennon, John’s son, after John Lennon left his mother. The lyrics to Hey Jude are supposed to put a more positive outlook on a sad situation for Julian.

The lyrics to Hey Jude are part of an over seven minute song that was the longest single to top the British charts up to 1968. Billboard magazine calls the song the 10th biggest song of all time in chart success.

The Beatles were full of many complicated interconnected personal relationships between the Beatles themselves, their significant others, children and others close to them. It is no surprise that there are multiple people from the era that attribute Hey Jude to “being about them.”

Here’s the Lyrics:

Hey Jude, don’t make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better

Hey Jude, don’t be afraid
You were made to go out and get her
The minute you let her under your skin
Then you begin to make it better

And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain
Don’t carry the world upon your shoulders
For well you know that it’s a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah

Hey Jude, don’t let me down
You have found her, now go and get her
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better

So let it out and let it in, hey Jude, begin
You’re waiting for someone to perform with
And don’t you know that it’s just you, hey Jude, you’ll do
The movement you need is on your shoulder
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah yeah
