Song 2 almost never existed in the first place. The band always considered Song 2 one of their most “deliberately basic” songs and never took the track very seriously. It was on the band’s list of songs to cut and not bother with releasing, but record execs liked the sound and simplicity of Song 2.

The song is 2:02 long, which made it a great 2 minute song to use to by radio DJs when they had to fill a small gap before a music break. There weren’t a huge number of exactly 2 minute songs that were popular at the time (and there still aren’t).  Song 2 was often the last thing you would hear back in the late 1990’s before the radio went to voice or a commercial – Song 2 literally became the bookend song of the era.
