Marijuana enjoys a special place in several genres of songs over the decades. Due to the drug’s illegal status recreationally in the US over the years, marijuana always carried a renegade, “against the status” quo association.
In stark contrast to marijuana’s association with illicit behavior, weed’s positive effects on creativity, the making of music, and most importantly, enjoying a good beat, has made the drug a favorite substance of songwriters and musicians. Stoned listening is an enjoyable activity – you get a deeper focus, get altered and enhanced perceptions, and sometimes even get better insight into the lyrics and music than you do when straight.
In recent years, the public view and government view on marijuana has changed. When several US states began to first decriminalize the recreational use of marijuana, and then other states began to allow the medical use of marijuana, the drug became more and more socially acceptable.
Now, many states in the USA have relaxed their marijuana laws and penalties for recreational and medical bud.
How will new music change as marijuana becomes less and less risky and more and more mainstream? Only time will tell.
