Here's more interesting things in songs and lyrics tied to Foo Fighters or about the 1990s in general.

Dave Grohl, frontman for Foo Fighters, himself has said in interviews that he wrote Everlong during one of the lowest points in his life. The time was Christmas of 1996.

Dave Grohl was fresh off of a divorce from photographer Jennifer Youngblood, and was literally a homeless rock star. He had been a leading member of Nirvana with Kurt Cobain and had started the Foo Fighters after Cobain’s death.

It was a string of rough times for Grohl. Grohl did not even have access to his own bank account at this time, was sleeping in a sleeping bag on his friend’s floor, and was on the verge of having his drummer and guitarist quitting the band. During all of this he wrote Everlong in the space of about 45 minutes.

The song was written about Veruca Salt’s Louise Post, whom Grohl was just starting to date. He claims the lyrics to Everlong are about being connected to someone so much that you love them physically and spiritually, and can sing along with them to harmonize perfectly.

Here’s the lyrics to Everlong:

hello
I’ve waited here for you
everlong
tonight I throw myself into
and out of the red
out of her head she sang

come down
and waste away with me
down with me
slow how
you wanted it to be
I’m over my head
out of her head she sang

and I wonder
when I sing along with you
if everything could ever feel this real forever
if anything could ever be this good again
the only thing I’ll ever ask of you
you’ve got to promise not to stop when I say when

breathe out so I can breathe you in
hold you in
and now I know you’ve always been
out of your head
out of my head I sang

and I wonder
when I sing along with you
if everything could ever feel this real forever
if anything could ever be this good again
the only thing I’ll ever ask of you
you’ve got to promise not to stop whn I say when
