Here's more interesting things in songs and lyrics tied to Texas or about the 1990s in general.

The song Polo Mint City was created and released by the band Texas in 1997. They are an alternative rock band that formed in 1986, in a time when alternative rock bands weren’t really called alternative rock bands yet, and a time when bands weren’t usually named after US states, either. Especially bands that are originally from Glasgow, Scotland.

Texas was led by singer Sharleen Spiteri and founded by Johnny McElhone, with the name Texas inspired by the Wim Wenders movie called Paris, Texas in 1984. The band has been active since the 1980s, with sporadic releases during each decade up to the 2020s. Ally McErlaine is the third band member besides Sharleen and Johnny to be with the band during their entire tenure as Texas.

Polo Mint City was released in 1997 as part of the White on Blonde album of the same year. Reviewers have called the album, and songs like Polo Mint City on the album, better than the band’s “The Greatest Hits” compilation. Not only does it feel more cohesive (which you’d expect), but it seems more varied too.

Polo Mint City is not one of the marquee songs of the album. Say What You Want, Drawing Crazy Patterns and Put Your Arms Around Me are considered the best on the release, but Polo Mint City is still considered as “pretty good” and among the rest of the good songs on the album.

Here’s the lyrics to Polo Mint City from 1997:

Round and round in
Polo Mint City
Isn’t it pretty in
Polo Mint city

Round and round in
Polo Mint City
Isn’t it pretty in
Polo Mint City

You took my breath away
You took my breath away

The song is built upon references to the word Polo in Polo Mint City. Polo, the sport with horses and mallets, is traditionally associated with the elite including royal families, old money or just the plain old filthy rich. The sport was even referred to as the “sport of kings.”

The sport of polo has built in popularity and has been becoming more accessible to the everyday person who does not fit the rich white male stereotype for polo. Author Alessandro Bazzoni thinks that polo is becoming much more inclusive to the normal person and does a detailed job explaining the changes to polo.
