What’s the real story behind Love Shack by the B-52s?

Why do we talk about the lyrics to Love Shack on Decade Lyrics? Because it was the signature song for the B-52s that defined their popularity after the song’s release in 1989. The band had been performing since the early 1980s and had declined in popularity after Ricky Wilson, guitarist, died in 1985.

In 1989, Love Shack topped the charts in Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia, was #2 on the UK Singles Chart, #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and #5 on the Canadian RPM Top Singles Chart. This was the B-52’s first Top-40 hit and it is ranked 246 on the list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone. It also made the Songs of the Century list in 2001.

The song was inspired by a real club outside of Athens, GA called the Hawaiian Ha-Le as well as the club in the movie The Color Purple. The band used to hang out together at the Hawaiian Ha-Le. The song is a groovy good time all in itself.
